System Administrator

  • Lead system administrative role in an AIX-based service bureau environment. 

  • Major responsibilities include: development of new scripts, processes, and procedures to help automate tasks and increase operational reliability; planning, design, and implementation of new products, such as new storage, backup, and process scheduling solutions; executing customer-driven projects to implement the system aspect of new products and services; providing evening and weekend availability for emergency recovery. 

  • Day-to-day tasks include server monitoring and maintenance, top-level technical support for system related application issues and connected customer devices, and support for a large array of automated processes largely composed of mission-critical file transfers with 3rd party vendors. 

  • Experience with the following products: IBM AIX, IBM DS4000 series SAN, Tivoli Storage Manager, Global Event Control Server, UniData Database. 

 

Chief System Engineer

3/1999 - 8/2003  Datatron, Waukee, IA

  • Sole hardware technician responsible for the setup, installation, and support of small systems, LAN and WAN networks, and attached devices; and for the engineering of new products and services for the user base. 

  • Technologies supported: IBM RS/6000 systems running AIX, Red Hat Linux, legacy Alpha Micro systems, OkiData printers, Multitech serial and network communications equipment. 

 

Web developer

  • Temporary contract position converting printed manuals into HTML for the Secretary of State website. 

 

Crew Trainer

  • Crew trainer and manager trainee, with on-the-job experience in both duties. Other duties included crew supervision, equipment maintenance, customer service, and food preparation. Received Customer Service Specialist recognition after first year. 

 

Desktop Support Technician

  • Temporary contract position to assist with such duties as computer assembly, software, network, and hardware support, page layout, typesetting, design and illustration.

Additional Skills and Experience

 

  • DSMGG.org – Senior staff and board member of the Des Moines Gaming Group, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to hosting large-scale multi-player computer gaming events on a regular basis. Helped set up, manage, and support dozens of 60-100 person “LAN Parties,” and helped maintain a friendly community of local gamers. 

  • MAGfest.org – LAN director. Using skills and experience developed with DSMGG to bring large-scale computer gaming to the Music And Gaming festival, an east coast convention dedicated to video gaming and the culture that surrounds it. Attendance in 2007 projected at greater than 1,200 people. 

  • Other applicable knowledge and skils: Experience with the set up and maintainance of basic Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks (including Frame Relay). Brief knowledge of C/C++ and perl coding, extensive knowledge and experience with UNIX shell programming. Experience with most industy standard production software, including Microsoft Office, Frontpage, and the Adobe design suite.
